Hilo is a medical-grade wearable for continuous blood pressure monitoring, paired with a companion app that delivers personalized insights and doctor-ready reports.
As a first-of-its-kind technology, Hilo upends the mental model that blood pressure monitoring requires an at-home cuff or a doctor's visit. Our challenge was to build a marketing and e-commerce site that simultaneously educated customers, built trust, and sold the product.
Still a startup, Hilo needed a small, nimble team that could integrate with their internal organization. Rather than starting from scratch, we overhauled their existing site, making deliberate decisions about what to keep and what to rethink, while leveraging the elements of their existing brand that worked well to springboard us forward.
The biggest design tension was between medical credibility and consumer desirability. Too clinical and it feels cold. Too lifestyle and you undermine the trust established by the clinically-certified readings on their wrist. We struck a balance by curating a mix of lifestyle and product photography, paired with styled technical specs and readings to present real-world context.
Hilo also requires regulatory approval market by market, so we built with scalability in mind — a design system that could adapt as new countries came online without rebuilding from scratch each time.
